Our
Story: In 1999 Richard Wallett (my brother)
started his own Dog Waste Removal business. He lives in California and I
live in Connecticut. At that time he told me he started a business, but he
wouldn't tell me what it was. When he finally told me that he started
his own Pooper Scooper service, we both almost broke our guts laughing.
The name of the business was as silly as the service offered, he named it Doggie Poo
Pick-up. After we finished laughing, he shared with me his belief that this
was a good business to make extra income to pay for his kids future college
bills. I thought about my children and my responsibilities to them.
I researched the idea here in CT and found no one offering
this service. Maybe here was a reason for this?
A star is born: We (My wife, Marybeth and I ) launched Doggie Poo Pick-Up by giving out business cards in May of 1999. We handed out cards to all the pet stores, the grocery stores and we even ran ads in the local paper. After one year we only had 3 customers. To add insult to injury one of the customers lived in Willimantic 30 miles away. Even with this slow start we were encouraged. The local paper (The Journal Inquirer ) ran a really nice story about us, Channel 3 WFSB had Dan Kane interview me. After Kane's piece, Gail King (our local announcer and Oprah's Pal) stated "I love that guy". For the record, Gail we love you too! Channel 30 had a short story also. Still only 3 customers.
What do you call it? We list our business under Pet Services and Dog categories in the SBC Yellow pages. We are in all of the directories that surround and include Hartford. There currently are no listings for Pooper Scooper, Pet Waste Removal, Dog Waste Removal or (my favorite high brow description) Canine Waste Removal but we are working on it.
Patience is a virtue: Today our Pooper Scooper service covers most of Central Connecticut. Our Pet Waste Removal Technicians (Pooper Scoopers) clean yards in Manchester, Glastonbury, East Hartford, South Windsor, Enfield, Windsor, Windsor Locks, Bloomfield, Avon, Unionville, Simsbury, Farmington, Southington, Bristol, Berlin, Rocky Hill, Newington, Cromwell, Middletown, Portland, Coventry, Bolton, Willington, and more! In addition to residential locations, we now have several commercial locations (i.e. apartment buildings, condominium complexes and veterinarian offices). We are affordable, dependable and happy to do your worst chore. This is really the best pet service!
